Molecular assemblies are ubiquitous in nature and the rapid rise of supramolecular chemsitry, the designed assmbly of molecular and ionic components into large entities, in part reflects the learning of Nature's lessons.~1 However, it also relfects a general increased awareness by chemists of the latent steric and electronic information embedded in individual molecular components. The 'glue' in supramolecular systems has very often involved weaker intermolecular forces such as hydrogen bonding and #pi#-cloud interactions, with contributions (both attractive and repulsive)from dispersion, polarisation and charge transfer interactions. However, metals have also been widely employed both as templating entities and as structural components in the final assembly-giving rise to the sub-field of metallosupramolecular chemistry.
