Why do we say one plant is an orchid and call another lant by another name? What makes an orchid different from any other plant? According to the present system of classification, plants are basically classified according to the characteristics of their flowers. Many plants cannot be told apart when they are not in bloom. On the other hand, even if their foliage is very similar, their flowers will present very different characteristics. That is why floral characteristics are the most popular and most logical means of identifying plants and distinguishing them from similar species.
