SAGUARO DID YOU KNOW?

This year winter in Iowa was colder than usual (or maybe I'm just getting older and it felt colder than usual!). We had many days where the actual temperature dipped below 0. A vacation in Arizona was a welcome getaway over the New Year holiday. For me, an avid "cactus lover", being able to spend a weekin Tucson is like a race car fan being able to drive the pace car at the Indy 500 race. To say the least, I was "in my element". Lucky for me, I have a son who is a Border Patrol Agent in Tucson, so I am able to escape to my element often. This year I took a day trip and drove thru the Saguaro National Park. The park consists of 142 square miles of barrel, cholla, and prickly pear cactus and of course mostly saguaro. The saguaro (pronounced saw-WAH-row with the emphasis on the middle syllable) seems tobe the universal symbol of the "Southwest. When you think of Arizona, the saguaro is the image most people conjure up in their mind.
