The Ceres greenhouse concept began with the desireto create a totally passive greenhouse aimed atlocal food production year round, a greenhouse that would maintain ideal conditions for plant growth without extreme temperature swings. The people at Ceres wanted to avoid heating with fossil fuels in winter because they believed that reliance on fossilfuel use was at odds with what many greenhouse owners want. To accomplish its goal, Ceres has designed super-insulated greenhouses with strategically placed glass and plastic glazing that minimize or entirely eliminate the need for artificial heating and cooling systems. In the company's words, "the result is a greenhouse that maintains warm, year-round temperatures, withstands the harshest weather conditions, and uses little to no fossil fuel energy."
