Lighting up your barn but not your wallet

LIGHTING system economics become more complex as the number of barn designs, lighting options, light performance characteristics, and initial and operating costs rise. Lighting economics become even more complicated when comparing different lighting options (light-emitting diode (LED) versus fluorescent versus metal halide) because of different useful life estimates, initial costs, electrical energy use and electrical rates for producing similar lighting levels. For this article, the term "lights" includes the fixture, lamp, electronics and housing.
