COH (M) 5 (UMH 03003) is a single cross maize hybrid involving UMI 285 as female parent and UMI 61 as pollinator. It matures in 100-105 days. The hybrid is suitable for cultivation both under irrigated (throughout the year) and rainfed (Sept.-Oct. sowing) situations. The hybrid was tested against COH (M) 4, a three way cross hybrid released by TNAU and the very popular private hybrid M 900 as checks. Under irrigated condition, the hybrid UMH 03003 recorded a mean grain yield of 5396 kg/ha which was 24 per cent increase over COH(M)4 (4283 kg/ha) and 2 % increase in grain yield over M 900 (4626 kg/ha). The same hybrid under rainfed condition recorded a mean grain yield of 4280 kg/ha which was 29 percent increase over COH(M) 4 (3330 kg/ha). The highestyield recorded by this hybrid is 8500 kg/ha in Karimnagar. The hybrid is resistant to downy mildew disease and moderately resistant to stem borer. The cobs are fully covered with husk and the percentage of seed set is high, The grains are bold (31 g/ 100 seeds), yellow in colour and flint-semi flint in texture. The grains possess more protein (8.23%) than M 900 (6.53 per cent) and starch content (68.7%) than COH(M) 4 (65.2 per cent). The new hybrid is recommended for cultivation in maize growing tractsof Tamil Nadu.
