Antibacterial Activity of Plant Extracts against Diseases of Bombyx mori

In vitro studies were conducted to determine the effective solvent for extraction of anti bacterial compounds from leaves of Thuja orientalis, Asparagus gonoclados, Aegle marmelos and rhizomes of Acorus calamus. Hexane, petroleum ether and chloroformwere tested for efficient extraction of antibacterial compounds. These plant extracts were used for the management of two different strains each from two species of bacteria, viz., Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus thuringiensis that were found to be highly pathogenic to mulberry silkworm, Bombyx mori L. The results revealed that the inhibition zone produced by the chloroform extract of A. gonoclados (17.00 mm, 16.00 mm) and A. marmelos (17.00 mm, 16.00mm) against two strains of S. aureus were as effective as that of streptomycin sulphate (17.00 mm, 15.00 mm). Similarly, chloroform extract of T. orientalis (22.5 mm, 22.5 mm) and A. gonoclados (21.0 mm, 21.0 mm) proved highly effective against two strains of 6. thuringiensis and were equal in its effectiveness with erythromycin (22.0 mm, 23.0 mm), the standard.
