In North Western agroclimatic zone of Tamil Nadu, nearly 77% of the total cultivable area is under rainfed farming and sorghum occupies a major area with pulses as intercrops. In sorghum based intercropping system, weeds pose serious problem, which can be detrimental to yield of both base and intercrop. Solaima'lai and Muthusankaranarayanan (2000) reported that application of herbicide increased the yield of sorghum and its intercrops over unweeded check and hand weeding. Due to labour scarcity and high cost of labour, hand weeding accounts for a major share in total cost of cultivation. Hence, an attempt was made to study the effect of herbicide on weed flora, yield and economics of sorghum-pulses intercropping system under rainfed condition.
