Effect of transplanting time on the performance of rice hybrids in Cauvery

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the staple food for more than 60 per cent of the world's population. Though India has the largest area under rice its production per unit area is by world standards, very low. To meet the growing demand of rice in coming years, there has been a significant research effort in breaking the yield barrier through genetic approach and consequent release of hybrid rice varieties in the recent years. Usually hybrids have been reported to give an extra yield advantage of 1-1.5 t ha~(-1) of grain yield over the best promising local variety. For exploiting the full heterotic potential of hybrid rice varieties, simultaneous development of a suitable production technology package for cultivation is essential. Among the different agronomic practices, time of planting is an important non monetary input especially for quality and yield point of view. Keeping the above facts in view, a field experiment was conducted at Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute, Aduthurai during kuruvai season of 1996 to study the optimum time of planting of hybrid rice to take the maximum yield potential.
