SVPR 2: a high yielding medium staple cotton variety for Tamil Nadu and south zone of India.

SVPR 2 is a high yielding medium staple cotton variety suited to summer irrigated/rice fallow tracts of Tamil Nadu, India. It is a hybrid derivative of the cross between TSDT 22 and JR 36 which matured in 150-160 days with an average kapas yield of1658 kg/ha which is a 37.3 and 35.4% increase over LRA 5166 and SVPR I, respectively. It is tolerant to drought. It was released for general cultivation in Tamil Nadu during January 1996 and the same variety has been identified for its release in the south zone of India and notified during 1997.
