Estimates of genetic variability in selected genotypes of sorghum

Seventy five genotypes of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) were selected, raised in RBD and replicated twice. The seeds were dibbled in spacing of 45 X 15 cm between rows and plants. Five plants were selected at random and observation were recorded for days to 50 per cent flowering, days to maturity, 100 grain weight and grain yield. The collected data were then subjected for variability analysis. Data on coefficients of variability, heritability, genetic advance and genetic advance as percent of mean are presented in the Table 1. The characters 100 grain weight and grain yield showed high GVC and PVC estimates suggesting that the selection based on these characters would facilitate successful isolation of desirable types. The estimates of genotypic coefficient of variation and phenotypic coefficient of variation provided better comparison of the characters regarding the extent of genetic variation.
