Effect of teprosyn and zinc sources on yield and nutrient uptake in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Frequent use of high analysis inorganic fertilizers to rice varieties and other associated led to many micronutrient nutritional disorders. Among the micronutrients, zinc deficiency has been found to be a common problem and continuous submergence aggravates the problem. Devarajan et al. (1987) reported that ZnSO_4 as soil application along with recommended dose of N, P and K is suggested for Zn deficient soils in rice crop to maximise the yield of rice. Soil application of ZnSO_4 leads to loss dueto drainage, seepage, fixation etc., in the soil system. So seed treatment with newly formulated chemical namely Teprosyn was tested along with other zinc carriers to assess the effect of Teprosyn and zinc carriers on the yield and nutrients uptake by rice. A field experiment was conducted on red sandy loam (Typic Ustropepts) in Zn deficient soil (0.522 mg kg~(-1)), at Agricultural Research Station, Bhavanisagar, during August 1999 to January 2000. The soil had pH 7.5; electrical conductivity 0.365 dS m~(-1). Soil test value indicated that available alkaline KMnO_4 was in medium range (236 kg ha~(-1)) and available P and K were in lower side (10.7 and 140 kg ha~(-1), respectively). There was adequate amount of DTPA extractable Fe (78.6 mg kg~(-1)), Cu(2.68 mg kg~(-1)) and Mn (22.3 mg kg~(-1)). There were two Teprosyn formulations. Teprosyn F-2498 contains Zn alone and Teprosyn F-3090 contains both Zn and P in its formulation. Other zinc carriers like ZnSO_4, ZnO were also taken along with Teprosyn formulations. Incorporation of green leaf manure (Glyricidia sp.) was also included in the treatments. There were different methods viz. seed treatment, soil application and foliar spray of zinc carriers. Altogether, there were thirteen treatments in a Randomised Block Design with three replications. ADT38 rice variety was used as test crop for the study.
