Calcium and magnesium uptak by maize as influenced by the application of organic manures and copper

Knowledge about the site and nature of micronutrient interactions occurring in soils or plants or both is basic to develop appropriate and efficient technologies. Interactions helps to refine the existing technologies to increase agricultural production while conserving the resources and maintaining the soil fertility for sustained productivity. With this fact in view, influence of organic manures and copper application, on calcium and magnesium uptake is discussed in this paper. A field experimentwas conducted in coarse textured soil deficient in DTPAA - Cu (0.58 mg kg~(-1)) with maize (Co 1) as test crop, in split plot design with three replications. The main plot comprised of no organic manure (M_0), poultry manure @ 6.25 t ha~(-1) (M_1) and farm yard manure @12.5 t ha~(-1) (M~2) and subplots comprised of different levels of copper (CuSO_45 H_2O) application viz., control (Cu_0), 6.25 (Cu_1), 12.5 (Cu2), 25 (Cu_3), 50 (Cu_4) Kg CuSO_4 ha~(-1) and 0.1 (Cu_5) and 0.2 (Cu_6) percent CUSO_45 H_20spray thrice on 30th40th and 50 days after sowing. Recommended doses of N, P and K were also applied. Grain and straw yields were recorded after the maturity of the crop and the samples were analysed for calcium and magnesium content (Jackson, 1973).
