The May issue contains a collection of papers on physical and biophysical chemistry, including one on the OC.Br radical and OC.Br anion van der Waals complexes, which were characterised by photoelectron spectroscopy by Duncan Wild et al.J. R. Reimers et al. describe frequency-based quantum computers: the registers of qubits in a quantum computer may be probed and manipulated using frequency-based techniques such as NMR spectroscopy. A major challenge is to design molecules to act as these registers. The authors describe a rational molecular design by consideration of the generic spectroscopic properties required for quantum computing. Designs in which two-qubit gate times scale similarly to those for one-qubit gates are presented. The specified spectroscopic requirements are largely independent of the type of spectroscopy used (e.g. NMR or vibrational) and should allow the design of larger quantum registers than have been demonstrated currently.
