Dr Andrew Hughes was born in 1963 in Albany, Western Australia. He obtained his BSc (First Class Honours) in 1984 at the University of Western Australia under the supervision of Professor R. Stick. He qualified for his PhD (1989) under the supervision of Professor Melvyn V. Sargent studying naphthalenoid and phenanthrenoid natural products also at the University of Western Australia.
