Vale Brian Clare: A great love of chemistry

Brian William Clare (13/12/1940 - 8/8/2008) made such an unusual and significant contribution to chemistry that it is fitting to record some of his life and achievements, which for the most part have gone uncelebrated outside his close circle of colleagues and friends in Perth and his international collaborators.
