SCHMALLENBERG VIRUS Identified In Bovine Semen

Schmallenberg Virus (SBV) has been identified in bovine semen following extensive testing in Germany, The Netherlands and France after bulls with known SBV antibody status were analysed for presence of the virus. Schmallenberg disease started to emerge in Belgium, France, Germany, The Netherlands in October 2011 and subsequently emerged in the UK in January 2012. The SBV virus takes its name from the small town in Germany, where the disease was first identified. The virus causes late abortion; high percentage of fetal deformities and resulting birth defects in cattle and sheep as well as, milk production loss, pyrexia and diarrhea.
