Someone once said, "In investing, what is comfortable is rarely profitable." If I didn't know any better I would say that someone was Jerry Rappaport, Lyle-haven owner and founder. It was actually American entrepreneur Robert Arnott and, although Arnott authored this quote, Jerry Rappaport may be the best single example of how true that statement is.Jerry, a real estate lawyer and developer, was not familiar with farming or dairy cows when he purchased the land where Lylehaven is located in East Montpelier, VT. The purchase was actually encouraged by his colleague and friend, Ed Banfield, a fellow professor at Harvard. Ed had a summer home in East Montpelier that Jerry and his family frequented for skiing. Ed convinced Jerry to purchase the surrounding land so that it wouldn't be developed and the agricultural land would be preserved.
