Biocatalysis is an expanding field of technology that is used in many important chemical manufacturing processes. The chemical industry is on the verge of a new era with a significant shift inevitable from petrochemical-based starting materials. This shift is motivated by the increasing costs and diminishing stocks of petrochemicals; concerns about the high energy requirements of chemical manufacturing processes; the high waste produced from such industries; and an increasing demand for complex chemical products that are enantiomerically pure. Integrating biologically catalysed reactions with existing chemical synthetic approaches will lead to the potential to create new industries and new products, reduce costs and waste from manufacturing, revive mature and no-growth industries and generally provide more efficient industrial processes. Continuing advances in this field along with the major developments that have already been achieved leads to what many believe as th century of biotechnology.1
