Amorphous calcium carbonate is a common precursor to formation of crystalline polymorphs of CaCO3 and is stored by organisms prior to biomineralisation into the required mineral form. Recently there has been growing experimental evidence that nanoparticles of amorphous CaCO3 might actually be more stable than crystalline forms of the same dimensions.
