Scientists of my vintage were warned that dealing with the media could mean professional death. Forty years later, scientists are being warned that not dealing with the media might bring the same result. Funding for research has become increasingly corporatised, and corporate bodies understand the need for media exposure. Corporations, universities and CRCs all have media units, some even with specialising science journalists whose job it is to put out the good news about their organisation's research.
