2007 Birch Medal winner:Carl Schiesser

The A.J.Birch Medal is the premier award of the RACI Organic Division and is awarded for excellence in organic chemical research conducted in Australia by a member of the RACI.The 2007 recipient of this medal is Professor Carl Schiesser,from Melbourne University,who was awarded the medal at the joint Organic and Physical Divisional Chemistry Conference on 1 February in Adelaide.Carl was awarded the medal for his pioneering and outstanding research on free radical chemistry,especially concerning the heteroatoms,silicon,tin,selenium and tellurium.After the award was presented by the chair of the Organic Division,Carl gave the Birch Medal lecture,entitled 'Taming the free radical shrew - learning to dance with heteroatoms'.
