Pyrrolizidine alkaloids and food safety

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are a possible under-recognised cause of lvier disease. They occur in common and staple foods at levels that are too low to produce aceute liver damage but high enough to be of concern as a possible long-term cause of cirrhosis and liver failure, especially in children.
