Serendipityand science are familiar acquaintances. Every so often, an opportunity comes along that is tantalising in its prospects. Such was the case with a chance call from retired diver Mr John Allport of Beaumaris to CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research, Aspendale, in October 2008, offering the greenhouse gas research group a sample of'old air' from a compressed-air diving tank.
