Born in Glasgow and brought up in the Orkney Islands,Stewart completed his studies at St Andrews University,St Andrews,Scotland where he received a BSc (Hons),a PhD for a thesis entitled 'Triple quadrupole and quinque quadrupole mass spectrometry studies of ion molecule reactions' (with Professor The Lord Tedder,St Andrews and Dr Steve Wade,BP Research,London).In addition he was also awarded a University Vacation Travelling Scholarship and the St Andrews University Frank Muir Prize for Humour.Finding that no one would take him seriously he came to La Trobe University in Melbourne to be a 'postdoc' in the developmental mass spectrometry laboratory of Professor Jim Morrison,working on laser-induced fragmentation in multiple quadrupole mass spectrometers and computer simulation of ions in mass spectrometers.
