A composite PA sheet has been used to produce a passenger airbag module housing that is 30% lighter in comparison with conventional injection-moulded PA 6 alternatives. The housing has been designed as part of a joint engineering project between Lanxess of Leverkusen and:Takata-Petri AG of Aschaffenburg;KraussMaffei Technologies GmbH of Munich;Bond-Laminates GmbH of Brilon;Christian Karl Siebenwurst GmbH & Co KG of Dietfurt, all in Germany. The airbag housing accommodates a gas generator and a folded airbag. Conventionally, such components are made mainly of steel, aluminium, or by the injection moulding of thermoplastics.
