The authors of this review article examined published literature and case reports in order to determine which medicines are reported to interact with St. John's wort (SJW; Hypericum perforatum L., Clustaceae) and the possible mechanisms. They brieflydiscuss SJW's traditional uses and its regulatory status in the United Kingdom and Sweden. SJW contains at least nine groups of compounds that may contribute to its reported effects. The effects of many constituents are unknown. SJW significantly affects the central nervous system, which may explain its usefulness in mild-to-moderate depression. Hyperforin is now considered the most likely constituent responsible for SJW's interaction potential.
