A newly published study of competency in the construction industry, conducted for the HSE, suggests that the industry's current understanding of 'competence' needs to move beyond knowledge and experience, to include "situational awareness and sustained, appropriate behaviour". The study suggests that a new definition of competence is needed in construction, comprising "occupational skills, relevant knowledge and understanding, and ongoing evidence of (positive) behaviours and attitudes".
