Under the action of ionizing radiation on aqueous solutions containing noble (gold, silver, platinum, etc.) and other (cadmium, lead, cobalt, nickel, etc.) metal ions and organic compounds (alcohols, formates, etc.), the ions undergo reduction with the formation of metal precipitates (for example, see [1] and references therein). Using the pulse radiolysis technique [2,3], we showed that short-lived metal atoms or ions in unusual and unstable oxidation states and then clusters of various degrees of complexity appear at the intermediate stages of the one-electron reduction of ions. Remita et al. [4] first found carbonyl compounds to be formed in the radiation-chemical reduction of metal (iron, ruthenium, and osmium) ions in alcohols saturated with carbon monoxide. It was also found [5] that the γ-irradiation of mixed aqueous-alcohol solutions of K_2PtCl_6 containing an alcohol and saturated with CO resulted in the reduction of platinum(IV) ions and in the formation of a cluster family with the general formula [Pt_3(CO)_6]_n~)2-), where n varied from 10 to 3 as the fraction of reduced ions increased with absorbed dose. In this paper, we report data on the formation of a nickel carbonyl compound in the radiation-chemical reduction of nickel(II) ions in an aqueous solution containing CO.
