160k pounds fine for slip with injury potential

A metalwork casting and machining company has been fined 160,000 pounds after an employee almost fell through a fragile roof while replacing a fan. Three employees of MJ Allen Holdings had been sent on to the roof of the firm's Kent workshop to carry out the work in September 2014. "They used a MEWP to get up there and then used one or two crawling boards, but these were basically just a plank of wood and had no edge protection," explained HSE inspector Guy Widdowson. Two of the workers subsequently came off the roof, leaving one man up there. He slipped and put his foot through the fragile asbestos sheeting but did not fall or suffer any injury.
