In 1947, after World War II service in the US Army Air Force, at the age of 32, I returned to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City as an assistant resident on the Medical Service of Dr Isadore Snapper. In 1947, Dr Snapper, Professor of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, invited his countryman and friend, Dr Willem J. Kolff, also from the Netherlands, to visit Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr Kolff had invented a rotating drum di-alyzer, had treated patients with uremia, and written a monograph-all during the Nazi occupation of Holland. Dr Snapper, a Jew, who fled the Netherlands to escape Nazi oppression and probable murder had translated the monograph and circulated it. Consequently, Dr Kolff donated one of his rotating drum dial-yzers to Dr Snapper.
