New guideline 'will cause more appeals'

The Sentencing Council's new guideline on health and safety crimes will lead to more organisations choosing to defend prosecutions and appeal fines, according to respondents to a survey by the Health and Safety Lawyers' Association (HSLA). Two-thirds of respondents believed that the higher penalties would lead more organisations to appeal against them, and three-quarters thought it would make organisations defend prosecutions.
