Career path: Aaron Smith--Regional safe mission adviser, Salvation Army, northern region

My job title is Salvation Army-speak, but a "safe mission" is any of the charity's projects, such as a church, nursery or hostel for homeless people. I visit each premises to give one-to-one support, because many of them struggle with risk assessments and safety priorities. I prioritise my work because resources are limited in any charity, but I'm working on developing strategies for dealing with sudden deaths. Many people who use our services have fallen on hard times, so it can happen. My region of responsibility is huge: it covers Yorkshire, the north east, the bits above Manchester, north Wales, Isle of Man, all of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. That's a lot of travel, but there are good transport links from where I live in Leeds.
