A port operator has been fined ?1.8 million after a worker's arm became wrapped around a powered capstan. The employee was using the capstan to moor a vessel at C.RO Ports London's terminal in Pur-fleet, Essex, on 6 June 2014 when his left hand became caught between the rotating drum and a heaving line. Despite a co-worker pressing the emergency stop, his left arm was wrapped tightly around the drum, which was only a few centimetres in diameter. He sustained multiple fractures and nerve and ligament damage.
