HSE guidance advises a minimum workplace lighting level of 5 lux and an average of 20 lux. The readings on a digital lux meter in our recycling yard are at lowest 2 and average 16. I've been told if vehicles are travelling at low speed, lighting levels can be reduced;;is that true? The HSE guide Lighting at Work HSG38 refers to Regulation 8 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, which specifies that "every workplace should have suitable and sufficient lighting". That's open to some interpretation.
