Concentration lapse led to chlorine leak

A POTENTIALLY deadly chlorine gas leak at a Total Fitness gym in Prenton, Wirral, has cost the firm 32,000 pounds. The incident happened in the pool plant room at 6.50am on 22 May 2006 when senior lifeguard David Blenkinsop mistakenly added chlorine granules to an acid tank rather than to the chlorine tank. Fumes leaked from the tank, and the whole building had to be evacuated. One gym member and four employees were taken to hospital, and the fire service was called to isolate the chemical container. Liverpool Crown Court heard that the similar blue tanks had colour-coded markings and Total Fitness had a written procedure for dosing the chlorine tank to guard against human error.
