Solvay fined for phosphorus leak

A chemical producer has been forced to pay more than 440,000 pounds after dangerous gas was released into the air, causing disruption to the M5 motorway and thousands of homes. On 2 January 2009 there was an uncontrolled release of phosphorus and phosphine from the Solvay Solutions UK plant in Oldbury in the West Midlands.
