A STEEL service company criticised for allowing a "safety vacuum" to develop has been handed a ?27,000 penalty over a string of flaws that led to a worker being struck by a steel girder. The employee narrowly escaped being crushed by the girder at Sherling Steel UK's Barnsley factory. Instead he was knocked to the floor when it hit him from behind.
