Managing health and safety effectively involves active monitoring arrangements. These include workplace inspections that are often delegated to members of the health and safety committee. The standards of safety and housekeeping on a site however reflect what directors and senior managers are prepared to tolerate. Senior mangers will achieve the level of health and safety which they demonstrate that they want to achieve. One effective way is to go out into the workplace and "react". The manner in which the senior managers react may well be the strongest single element in improving the safety climate on a site. Their reactions tell the organisation what is and what is not acceptable.
