NHS trust settles allergy claim for six figures

A TRAINEE NURSE forced to give up her career after she developed a latex allergy has received a six-figure out-of-court settlement from her NHS employer. Tanya Dodd, now aged 25, had to abandon her training at Scarborough General Hospital in 2002 when she developed type-1 latex allergy from wearing latex gloves, which were the only ones available on the hospital's wards. "I was told that if I was caught using latex-free gloves without special authorisation from occupational health and the ward sister, then this was a punishable offence," she said. "The dangers of latex weren't mentioned during my training and I wasn't advised to minimise my exposure to it."
