A MANCHESTER judge has I ordered the UK's largest builder's merchants to pay more than 190 000 pounds in fines and costs after one of its employees was crushed between two vehicles in an overcrowded yard. Ryan Reade suffered a punctured lung and underwent a tracheotomy and spleen removal during three weeks in intensive care, after a heavy goods vehicle reversed into him in September 2004, trapping him between the tines of a forklift at Travis Perkins' Bell Street site in Oldham, Greater Manchester. Reade, who worked as a yard assistant, had been adjusting the tines ready to lift a pallet from the bed of the delivery vehicle when it backed up, crushing him against the truck.
