OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY is a multidisciplinary profession that requires a detailed and up-to-date knowledge of a wide range of subjects: law, risk management, occupational health and hygiene, human factors and ergonomics. We expect our health and safety managers to professionally inform, counsel and support employees and management. This implies that their role extends far beyond pointing out problems and shortcomings in traditional health and safety matters; rather it calls upon them to develop strategies to promote a positive health and safety culture. Human attitudes and behaviours are often contributory factors to the cause of accidents, so a health and safety practitioner may have to investigate - and influence - the way people think and behave. Today's health and safety professional must be able to communicate at all levels, as well as demonstrate their technical skills. Well-qualified health and safety professionals add real value to your organisation. Not only do they play a central role in preventing accidents and illness at work, but they impact on productivity, morale, the organisation's image and the bottom line, as downtime and the costs of insurance, investigation and possible legal penalties have to be met.
