The key to the door?

IN THE PAST, health and safety practitioners tended to move into the profession from a background in science, technology or management. Today, safety and health is a discipline in its own right, with recognised professional qualifications. The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) represents individuals with a professional involvement in health and safety, whether they are in industrial, commercial or public sector organisations (see box 1). As Europe's leading body in this area, IOSH's membership has reached 26 000 and is still growing. A glance through recruitment advertisements shows that the majority of advertisers want to employ either: those who are corporate members of IOSH/those who are in the process of becoming corporate members or/those who possess a qualification that entitles them to apply for corporate membership.
