THE AGEING workforce is causing worldwide concern. In the UK more people are retiring than entering the workforce, at the same time people are living longer, which is creating pressures on pension systems and welfare services. As the number of people remaining healthy and active into their 80s increases, a fixed retirement age around 60 is no longer logical, on top of this age discrimination in employment will become illegal in 2006. The Equal Research Network recently held a workshop on Keeping The Older Worker Healthy And Safe where an eclectic group of speakers discussed occupational health, the implications for extending working life and returning to work after serious illness. The event was hosted by the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) in Sheffield.
