The Mall's centres of excellence

SHOPPING CENTRES could never be described as high-risk environments but because of the large volumes of people using them, they must be made as risk-free as possible. Those in charge of retail complexes have to balance the pressure of complying with safety legislation enforced by local authorities, without compromising customer service. The Mall Corporation operates 23 shopping centres across the UK, from Southampton to Aberdeen, which house around 2100 retail units. The company employs approximately 350 people directly, works closely with about 800 supplier staff (including cleaners and maintenance and security staff) and attracts around five million shoppers a week. Last year The Mall joined forces with Preston City Council to develop a safety compliance system, called MallSafe, at all its shopping centres, which has resulted in a multi-site approach to health and safety and a reduction in its compliance burden.
