The Intellectual and Musical Life and Legacy of an Original-Genius

Although C.P.E. Bach was born in Weimar, his family lived there only a few years before his father was hired as kapellmeister at C?then in 1717. Before Carl's tenth birthday, the family moved again to Leipzig (see figure 1.1), where his father became Thomaskantor in 1723. Young Carl and his elder brother Wilhelm Friedemann (1710-1784) enrolled in the Thomasschule, where they received a broad education, with musical instruction from their father. Two half-brothers were also born in Leipzig: Johann Christoph Friedrich (1732-1795) and Johann Christian (1735-1782). Here C.P.E. Bach wrote his first compositions and performed with his father at churches and the Collegium Musicum. This map dates from the time that he left Leipzig, in the fall of 1734, to continue his university studies at Frankfurt an der Oder.
