Chevron to Build Pre-Commercial Plant to Test Technology

Chevron said Thursday it plans to build a pre-commercial plant at its refinery in Pascagoula, Miss., to test the technical and economic feasibility of what it calls a "breakthrough" heavy oil upgrading technology. The technology, which Chevron has dubbed Vacuum Resid Slurry Hydrocracking (VRSH), has the potential to considerably raise yields of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel from heavy and ultra-heavy crude oils. It could also be utilized to boost and upgrade production of heavy oil resources, the company said.
