The United States produces about 25 percent of the world's salt or about 46 million tonnes of salt a year.The second largest salt producer is China,followed by Germany,India,Canada,Australia,Mexico,France,Brazil and the United Kingdom.Salt is mined using several methods.Dry salt,for example,is produced using three basic technologies:solar evaporation of seawater or saline lake water,solution mining or convention deep shaft(rock salt)mining.In the United States,nearly half of the salt produced is in the form of brines from captive brine wells to supply chloralkali to chemical companies.
