Textile and clothing exports from Cambodia rose by 12.3% in 2015, reflecting increases in the number of factories and employment in the Cambodian industry. Much of the rise stemmed from higher demand in the EU market, where sales of Cambodian textiles and clothing rose by 31.7%. Exports to the US market, by contrast, rose by only 0.4%. Textile and clothing exports from Indonesia fell by 4.0% in 2015, and during January-June 2016 they were down by 1.8%. Furthermore, domestic demand for clothing in Indonesia has weakened. In 2015 clothing retail sales in Indonesia declined by 6.7% and during January-June 2016 they were down by a sharp 20.8%. In Malaysia, textile and clothing exports rose by 7.9% in 2015, and during January-June 2016 they were up by 5.5% The latter increase occurred despite the fact that sales of Malaysian textiles and clothing were down sharply in the US import market during January-August 2016 and were also down in the EU import market during January-May 2016. The increase reflected buoyant growth in exports to a number of other countries during the first half of the year.
