World Textile and Apparel Trade and Production Trends: Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey

Egyptian textile and clothing exports declined by 15.4% in 2012 after surging between 2007 and 2011. The decline stemmed primarily from weak sales in Egypt's largest foreign markets—the EU and the USA—although demand was down in a number of other foreign markets. Nevertheless, production data for the financial year ending June 30, 2012, show that output of all the major textile and clothing product categories increased. In Morocco, clothing exports increased for the third consecutive year in 2012, by 5.1%, although during January-June 2013 they were down by 3.0% compared with the corresponding period a year earlier. Clothing production in the country mirrored these trends, having increased by 9.8% in 2012 and having fallen by 3.9% during the first quarter of 2013. Having said that, sales of Moroccan clothing in the EU market during January-June 2013 were up by 9.2% while sales in the US market during January-July 2013 were up by 3.5%.
